Abstract

This study compares prestressed concrete designs based on different earthquake-resistant building standards, namely SNI 1726:2002, Eurocode EN 1998-1-1:2004, PPIUG 1983, and prestressed concrete design requirements based on EN 1992-1-1:2004. The study was conducted to assess the differences in initial prestressing force (Fo) requirements, structural element dimensions, and earthquake load resistance in both standard approaches. Prestressed concrete designed using the Eurocode approach was shown to require up to 12% less initial prestressing force than the SNI requirements. This is due to two main factors: lower prestress loss and a larger effective flange width in the Eurocode calculation method. This difference has implications for material efficiency, as the tendon cross-sectional area required in the Eurocode design is smaller than in the SNI, primarily due to the relatively stricter cracking moment requirements in the SNI. Nevertheless, the study results indicate that prestressed concrete designs based on the Eurocode have better earthquake resistance. This is influenced by the magnitude of the earthquake load calculated using EN 1998-1-1:2004, which is generally higher than the results of the earthquake load calculations in SNI 1726:2012. This condition results in a stronger structural design and is better prepared to face major earthquake scenarios. This difference in approach confirms that the choice of design standards significantly influences the efficiency of material use and the level of structural safety. Thus, the integration of prestressed concrete design principles according to Eurocode can be an alternative to improve the seismic performance of structures in Indonesia, as long as it still pays attention to compliance with applicable local regulations. This study contributes to the development of more effective, efficient, and safe earthquake-resistant building design practices.
